Australian citizenship was created through the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948, and came into effect 26 January 1949, soon after the post-war mass migration program was launched (in 1945). Prior to 1949, Australians could only hold the status of British subjects.
Many countries have a law named Citizenship Act, which regulates the citizenship of the country. Laws of that name include: (among others) The Australian Citizenship Act 1948, originally called the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948. The Bhutanese Citizenship Act 1958, repealed by the 1985 Act.
On 7 February 2018, Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson of the One Nation Party introduced a bill into the Senate which proposes changes to the Australian Citizenship Act that are even more draconian than the amendments that were supported in 2017 by the Turnbull Government - which ultimately did not secure passage.
