Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga (7 August 1533 – 29 November 1594) was a Spanish soldier and poet born in Madrid. During his stay in Chile (1556-1563) he fought against the Araucans (Mapuche), where he began writing the epic "La Araucana", considered one of the greatest epics of the Spanish Golden Age.
