Andrea Mantegna. Andrea Mantegna - Renaissance Painter, Mantua Court: Mantegna has been characterized as strongly jealous of his independence; yet by entering the service of the marchese di Montova (Mantua), Ludovico Gonzaga, in 1459, he was forced to submit to limitations on his freedom of travel and acceptance of commissions from other patrons.
Mantegna and his cohort were assigned the task of painting scenes from the life of Saint James. In the end, Mantegna took control of the project and did much of the work. Mantegna brought all three developments together in his paintings. He was a master of perspective, and was one of the first to experiment with low vantage points, as in his frescos on the martyrdom of St. James in the Ovetari chapel in the church of the Eremitani in Padua (we show black and white photos, because the chapel was destroyed in 1944 by a bomb - a mis-directed American one!).
