William Hewlett, in full William Redington Hewlett, (born May 20, 1913, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S.—died January 12, 2001, Palo Alto, California), American engineer and businessman who cofounded the electronics and computer corporation Hewlett-Packard Company (HP).

Bill Hewlett was one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable men, and one of America’s most uncommon. This quiet, self-effacing man, together with his longtime friend and partner, David Packard, changed the world and helped usher in the modern technological age.

Bill Hewlett left no guidance on how he expected the foundation to be run and no specific directions on how its funds should be spent. Instead, he left an independent foundation imbued with his own curiosity, approaches to problem-solving, and generous and forgiving spirit.

Bill, a member of the US Army Reserve, was called into service in February of 1942. He would serve most of his tour as a Signal Corps officer in Washington, DC, while Dave stayed with the company to keep up with war production demands, sleeping on a cot in his office to manage operations day and night.

Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard become friends when they bond over a two-week camping trip. 1938 Bill and Dave work part-time building devices in a Palo Alto garage. With only $538 in capital, they invent the “HP Model 200A”, an oscillator used to test sound equipment.

Bill Hewlett and David Packard graduated with degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1935. The company started in a garage in Palo Alto during a fellowship they had with past professor Frederick Terman at Stanford during the Great Depression, whom they considered a mentor in forming the company.
