The Brandenburg Gate in Potsdam predates its more famous namesake in Berlin by eighteen years. Both gates were similarly named because they were on the route to the town of Brandenburg. This one was designed as a triumphal Arch for Frederick the Great and is said to be a copy of the Arch of Constantine in Rome.

The Brandenburg Gate is the most splendid city gates in Potsdam and is the culmination of the Potsdam promenade. Friedrich II had this impressive city gate built after the Seven-Year´s War in 1770/71. Between 1756 and 1763, Prussia and Austria fought against each other in the Third Silesian War.

It stands at the western end of Brandenburger Straße, which runs in a straight line up to the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul.
