St. Elizabeth of Portugal, (born c. 1271—died July 4, 1336, Estremoz, Portugal; canonized 1625; feast day July 4), daughter of Peter III of Aragon, wife of King Dinis (Denis) of Portugal. She was named for her great-aunt St. Elizabeth of Hungary and received a strict and pious education.

Elizabeth was a Spanish princess who was given in marriage to King Denis of Portugal at the age of twelve. She was very beautiful and very lovable. She was also very devout, and went to Mass every day. Elizabeth was a holy wife, but although her husband was fond of her at first, he soon began to cause her great suffering.

Saint Elizabeth of Portugal’s Story. Elizabeth is usually depicted in royal garb with a dove or an olive branch. At her birth in 1271, her father Pedro III, future king of Aragon, was reconciled with his father James, the reigning monarch. This proved to be a portent of things to come.

Princess Elizabeth (Isabel) of Aragon, who became the queen of King Dinis of Portugal, and ultimately was raised to the honors of the altar as St. Elizabeth of Portugal, was born in Saragossa, Spain, around 1271.

Elizabeth of Portugal was an Aragonese princess, the daughter of King Peter III and Constance of Sicily . She married King Denis of Portugal in 1280. Her diplomatic skills and pious nature led her to act as a mediator to various political factions within both the Aragonese and Portuguese royal families, earning her the sobriquet "the Peacemaker."
