The Englischer Garten was originally commissioned to be built as a recreation area for soldiers stationed near Munich, as well as a drill and training ground. This all happened in 1789 at the direction of Elector Karl Theodor. In 1792, the government opened the park to the public and quickly became one of the city’s main attractions.
