The "Englischer Garten" (English Garden) is Munich's largest park. In addition to its beer gardens, the famous Monopteros and surfing waves beckon. Here's why it's worth a visit:
Stretching more than 21 acres from the heart of Munich's city centre to its north-eastern limit, the Englischer Garten (the English Garden) is one of the largest urban parks in the world, and a surprising green lung in the Bavarian capital. The park was commissioned in 1789 by Elector Karl Theodor, who had inherited the throne of Bavaria unwillingly and tried to make up for the reciprocating unhappiness of his people by dedicating himself to making improvements to the city of Munich.
From the famed hill known as the Monopteros, Englischer Garten offers splendid views of the city. Its grounds also contain jogging and cycling paths as well as multiple recreational football fields. There are now many restaurants and a Japanese Teahouse, as well as several beer gardens including one at the Chinese Tower, which seats around 7,000 patrons.
Den Namen "Englischer Garten" erhielt der Park, weil er nicht als minutiös geometrisch ausgelegter Französischer Barockgarten, sondern im Stile eines Englischen Landschaftsparks angelegt wurde.
No matter what you want from a park, Munich’s Englischer Garten has it all. You can have a quiet stroll through the northern section, or you can be where the action is in the south. The Englischer Garten is definitely worth a (or many!) visit. We certainly enjoyed it, and you can see our experience in the Garten by watching our Youtube video here.

The English Garden (Englischer Garten) lies in the midst of bustling Munich and is one of the largest city parks in Europe, larger even than New York's Central Park. It stretches all the way from Munich's city center to the northeastern city limits.
