Ernest Augustus On 23 April 1799, Ernest Augustus was created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale and Earl of Armagh by his father the king. With a seat in the House of Lords, he took an interest in politics. Ernest held radical Tory views, and soon became a leader of the right of the party, he opposed Catholic emancipation and the Reform Act.

Ernest Augustus was King of Hanover from 20 June 1837 until his death in 1851. As the fifth son of King George III of the United Kingdom and Hanover, he initially seemed unlikely to become a monarch, but none of his elder brothers had a legitimate son.

Ernest Augustus was made Duke of Cumberland by his father and became King of Hanover on 28 June 1837, on the death of his brother William IV of the United Kingdom.
