The Fangcang shelter hospitals in China were large-scale, temporary hospitals, rapidly built by converting existing public venues, such as stadiums and exhibition centres, into health-care facilities.

The 300-bed fangcang hospital in Lao People’s Democratic Republic closed in June 2021 after cases dropped but is prepared to reopen. In the Kyrgyz Republic, the pandemic peaked in July 2021 and a dozen “pop-up” hospitals opened in Bishkek’s gyms, hotels, and restaurants, and night-time temporary hospitals treated 9,203 patients.

Findings.
