In 1517, Francisco Hernández de Córdoba set sail from Cuba with a small fleet. The expedition sailed west from Cuba for three weeks before sighting the northeastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula. The ships could not put in close to the shore due to the coastal shallows.

The first expedition to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula was led by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. He and 110 men on three vessels departed Cuba on February 9, 1517 and within weeks had spotted pyramids, people and farms in places like Isla de Mujeres and El Meco.

The March 25, 1517 battle of Champotón actually pre-dated the arrival of conquistador Hernán Cortés two years later. The 1517 expedition led by Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba sailed around the Yucatán peninsula and landed at Champotón, on Mexico’s Gulf coast, looking for fresh water.
