Gulangyu is a good escape from the city and once you get away from the ferry terminals it is pleasantly quiet. There are lots of nice beaches on Gulangyu and it is pretty cheap to get to but there are some island attractions that you have to pay extra for (50 for sunlight rock, 30 for a garden, etc) and if you do want to do them all you can get a ticket package for 90 yuan and save 20.
