Hubei, Wade-Giles romanization Hu-pei, conventional Hupeh, sheng (province) lying in the heart of China and forming a part of the middle basin of the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang). Until the reign of the great Kangxi emperor (1661–1722) of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911/12), Hubei and its southern neighbour Hunan formed a single province, Huguang.
Hubei province is situated in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and to the north of Dongting Lake with Wuhan as the capital. It is near to Anhui to the east, Jiangxi and Hunan to the south, Chongqing to the west, Shaanxi to the northwest and Henan to the north. There are many lakes in the territory, so Hubei is also known as the province of thousands of lakes.
While eastern Hubei is better known for its industrial belt rather than scenic beauty, the region's central location has ensured it played a key role in China's history. Vestiges spanning thousands of years, from the ancient state of Chu to the modern Wuchang Uprising, which led to the downfall of dynastic China, are woven into the province's very fabric.
The province is north of Dongting Lake, hence the name Hubei which means 'north of the lake.' Hubei Province borders six provinces with Henan to the north, Anhui to the east, Jiangxi and Hunan to the south, and Shanxi to the northwest. Landforms: Hubei features three main geographical features: mountains, uplands, and river basin plain. Hubei is bounded by mountains on the western, eastern and northern sides.

Hubei cuisine is one of China's ten major styles of cooking. With a history of more than 2,000 years, Hubei cuisine, originating in ancient Chu cuisine, has developed a number of distinctive dishes, such as steamed blunt-snout bream in clear soup, preserved ham with flowering Chinese cabbage, and others.
Hubei is located in the agricultural transition zone between the wheat-growing North and the rice-growing South; it is one of China’s leading rice-producing provinces. In southern and southeastern Hubei, where rainfall is greater and irrigation more easily practiced, most of the cultivated land is devoted to rice growing.

Wuhan lies in the eastern Jianghan Plain, on the confluence of the Yangtze River and its largest tributary, the Han River.
