The lake received its name from the stream which is its source, Temescal Creek, which was dammed in 1868 to create a reservoir to provide drinking water for the greater East Bay area, pumped by the Contra Costa Water Company, owned by Anthony Chabot. Prior to being dammed, Lake Temescal was a sag pond, a depression caused by the Hayward Fault.

4628. 83223. 1/6/2023. 1 check-in. Temescal Regional Recreation Area is a nice public park on the north side of Oakland, near the city's border with Berkeley. It's one of over 70 parks in the East Bay Regional Park District. Of those 70+ parks, this is one of the original three, opened in 1936.
Maximum site capacity is 75. Streamside has five 10-ft picnic tables, two single BBQs, and one drinking fountain with a spigot. The site is very shady, adjacent to a large lawn area and the creek on the southern end of the lake, 200 yards from the Broadway Terrace parking lot. Flush toilets are 100 yards away.
