Nestor Ivanovych Makhno [a] (8 November [ O.S. 27 October] 1888 – 25 July 1934), also known as Bat'ko Makhno ("Father Makhno"), [b] was a Ukrainian anarchist revolutionary and the commander of the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the Ukrainian Civil War .
Born in Ukraine of peasant stock in Hulyai-Pole, Yekaterinoslav guberniya, Nestor Makhno (n é Mikhnenko) became an anarchist during the 1905 Revolution. Makhno's father had died when he was an infant, so he worked as a shepherd from the age of seven and as a metalworker in his teens, attending school only briefly.
The 2005 Nine Lives of Nestor Makhno was a Russian biographical miniseries about Nestor Makhno's life. Pavel Derevyanko portrayed Makhno, and Russian critics gave his performance high praise. The series was noted for its positive portrayal of Makhno, although some reviewers also criticised the series for lacking narrative coherence.
