Hesse-Darmstadt, German Hessen-darmstadt, former landgraviate, grand duchy, and state of Germany. It was formed in 1567 in the division of old Hesse; after Hesse-Kassel was absorbed by Prussia in 1866, Hesse-Darmstadt was usually known simply as Hesse.
The term "Rhenish Hesse" (German: Rheinhessen) refers to the part of the former Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt located west of the Rhine. With the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in Central Europe in 1806, the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt was elevated to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. The first act of mutual recognition between the two states occurred in 1829 with the accreditation of the first U.S. consul to Hesse, and relations between the two countries expanded through 1871.
