The Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge is open year round. A one-mile wildlife drive and over three miles of hiking trails provide access to grasslands, tidal marshes and the river’s edge. The refuge is one of the largest open areas remaining in northern Virginia.

The refuge is home to 650 plant species, 218 bird species, 55 butterfly species and robust wildlife communities. The Refuge is open to the public Thursdays through Sundays from 7am-7pm (excluding hours of darkness). Occoquan Bay offers an excellent opportunity for young and novice hunters to participate in annual whitetail deer managed hunt.
The refuge is a beautiful place. Easy trails, lots of wildlife, lovely views along the river. Be aware that part of the Deephole Point Rd(seems especially in the NE section) floods during storms and debris and trash afterward may make the trail a bit of an obstacle course.
The refuge has a mix of wetlands, forest, and native grasslands that provides a diversity of habitats for wide variety of species. Wetland habitats cover about 50% of the refuge and include wet meadows, bottomland hardwoods, open freshwater marsh, and tidally influenced marshes and streams.

Most are compacted and level but portions are not easily traveled by strollers or wheelchairs. Pets are prohibited in the refuge.
