Oriel College (/ ˈ ɔː r i əl /) is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. Located in Oriel Square , the college has the distinction of being the oldest royal foundation in Oxford (a title formerly claimed by University College , whose claim of being founded by King Alfred is no longer promoted).

Oriel was the fifth college to be founded at Oxford. It began with a Provost and just 10 Fellows, all graduates, who studied Theology, Law and Medicine. The college prospered and grew. Three Provosts went on to become Bishops. Life was not entirely peaceful, though.
