Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine (German:Karl) (23 April 1809 – 20 March 1877) was a German prince, officer and politician. He was the second surviving son of Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse and Wilhelmine of Baden. The prince had a military career and became a general in the infantry of the army of the Grand Duchy of Hesse.

On 15 December 1948, the Dowager Marchioness attended the christening of her great-grandson, Prince Charles. She was one of eight sponsors or godparents, along with King George VI, King Haakon VII of Norway, Queen Mary, Princess Margaret, Prince George of Greece and Denmark, Lady Brabourne, and David Bowes-Lyon.

Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine was born in 1863 and was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. She would go on to marry Prince Louis of Battenberg and have four children, among them Princess Alice – Prince Philip’s mother – making her Charles’ great-grandmother.
