Over 17,000 acres of mature hardwood forest, interspersed with springs, fens, creeks, and ponds, provide habitat for woodland birds and other wildlife. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, and beaver can be found along the park’s 37 miles of trails. In winter, migratory waterfowl fill the ponds.

The word "forest" in the park's name is apt. The entire park is wooded. Although there is a "scenic drive" which does a loop of the park, there are no vistas. Everything is in the trees.
