Victoria. The eldest daughter of Princess Alice (the third child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) and Louis IV, the Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, Victoria was born in Windsor Castle in April 1863. Throughout her life, Victoria was presented with many hard challenges.

In 1937, Victoria’s brother, Ernst Ludwig, died and soon afterwards her widowed sister-in-law, nephew, granddaughter and two of her great-grandchildren all died in an air crash at Ostend. Victoria’s granddaughter, Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark, had married Victoria’s nephew (Ernst Ludwig’s son), Georg Donatus of Hesse and by Rhine.

Princess Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie of Hesse and by Rhine was born in the Tapestry Room at Windsor Castle in Windsor, England, on April 5, 1863, in the presence of her grandmother, and namesake, Queen Victoria. The two Victorias shared a very close bond that would last their entire lives.
