Stephen Fuller Austin (November 3, 1793 – December 27, 1836) was an American-born empresario. Known as the " Father of Texas " and the founder of Anglo Texas, [1] [2] he led the second and, ultimately, the successful colonization of the region by bringing 300 families and their slaves from the United States to the Tejas region of Mexico in 1825.

Stephen F. Austin was never a robust man, and his health was weakened by overwork, his experience in prison, and a bout of malaria. In the fall of 1836, he contracted a severe cold. He continued to try to work in spite of his illness.

Stephen Fuller Austin, founder of Anglo-American Texas, son of Moses and Maria (Brown) Austin, was born at the lead mines in southwestern Virginia on November 3, 1793. In 1798 Moses Austin moved his family to other lead mines in southeastern Missouri and established the town of Potosi in what is now Washington County.
