Toro is a town and municipality in the province of Zamora, part of the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It is located on a fertile high plain, northwest of Madrid at an elevation of 740 metres (2,430 ft). Toro is known as a center of Mudéjar art and as a wine-producing region.
Its strategic position gave rise to it being a site of conflict between Christians and Muslims, a court of kings and the capital of the province in the 19th century. The town of Toro is built in the shape of a fan and in its centre stands the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, from the 12th century.

Toro is a wine region in Castilla y Leon, north-western Spain. It is becoming increasingly well known for its powerful, full bodied red wines made from Tinta da Toro ( Tempranillo ). Very small amounts of white wine are also made. It is named for the town of Toro, an ancient settlement just 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of the Portuguese border.
Driving to Toro from Madrid. Toro is about two and a half hours northwest of Madrid. The highway route passes straight through Spain’s expansive plains, scattered throughout with herds of grazing goats, sheep, and, of course, bulls. It’s a fairly boring drive, but we did have a chance to stop in Medina del Campo.
