Overview. Utah covers an area of 84,899 sq mi (219,890 km 2 ). It is one of the Four Corners states and is bordered by Idaho in the north, Wyoming in the north and east, by Colorado in the east, at a single point by New Mexico to the southeast, by Arizona in the south, and by Nevada in the west.
The geography of Utah varies from arid desert terrain south and west of Salt Lake City to lush alpine meadows in its mountain ranges. Major mountain ranges include the Wasatch Range near Salt Lake City, the Uinta Mountains in northeastern Utah, and the Kaiparowits Plateau in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Human Geography. People. Utah has one of the nation's youngest populations, lowest deathrates, and highest birthrates. In recent years, however, both the birth and the fertility rates have declined sharply. Still, the state's natural increase rate is among the highest in the nation and will probably continue to be so indefinitely.
