A. H. Parker High School is a public, urban high school located in the northern section of Birmingham, Alabama (Jefferson County). The school was conceptualized as the first public high school for Negro students in Birmingham. In 1900, its initial enrollment consisted of 18 students, compared to the 1,235 in 2006.

Despite that setback Parker went on to become an educator for more than 50 years and the first principal of Industrial High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Industrial High School was the first high school for African Americans in Birmingham and since his retirement in 1939 bears A.H. Parker’s name.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —. A.H. Parker High School was founded in 1900 and became the first public high school for Blacks in Birmingham, Alabama. The school was originally called Negro High School but was later renamed in honor of former principal Arthur Harold Parker. It opened its doors in the Smithfield community with just 19 students.
