Adolph Tidemand was Norway's most important folk painter in the XNUMXth century, who did a life's work presenting the life and customs of the Norwegian farmer. He is a unifying figure of national romanticism and inspired many of the poets of the day with his paintings, including Andreas Munch and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.
Adolph Tidemand set out on the journey southward on 8 June 1841. Travelling to Munich along the Rhine by steamship and horse and carriage, he visited many sights, cities, towns and artists along the way. Almost three and a half months later, on 21 October, Tidemand arrived in Italy.
