    Itúrbide, Agustín de (1783–1824) Mexican general and politician, who helped Mexico achieve independence (1821) and was emperor (1822–23). Dissent crystallized when Santa Anna and Guadalupe Victoria called for the creation of a republic. Iturbide abdicated and was exiled. Early in 1824 he returned to Mexico and was promptly arrested and shot.
