Alexander Graham Bell, (born March 3, 1847, Edinburgh, Scot.—died Aug. 2, 1922, Beinn Bhreagh, Nova Scotia, Can.), Scottish-born U.S. audiologist and inventor. He moved to the U.S. in 1871 to teach the visible-speech system developed by his father, Alexander Melville Bell (1819–1905).

Alexander Graham Bell was the first to secure a patent for the telephone, but only just. And it almost cost him his marriage... At the age of eleven he chose to add the middle name Graham, which stuck for the rest of his life. This plaque (on the right) is outside Alexander Graham Bell’s birthplace in Charlotte Square, Edinburgh.
