Alfonso IX (15 August 1171 – 23 or 24 September 1230) was King of León and Galicia from the death of his father Ferdinand II in 1188 until his own death. He took steps towards modernizing and democratizing his dominion and founded the University of Salamanca in 1212.

Alfonso IX Ivrea of León was born 15 August 1171 to Ferdinand II, King of León (1137-1188) and Urraca of Portugal (1151-1188) and died September 1230 of unspecified causes. He married Teresa of Portugal (c1176-1250) 1191 JL . He married Berenguela of Castile (1180-1246) 1197 JL .

Alfonso V (c. 994 – 7 August 1028), called the Noble, was King of León from 999 to 1028. Like other kings of León, he used the title emperor ( Imperator totius Hispaniae) to assert his standing among the Christian rulers of Spain.  He succeeded his father, Bermudo II, in 999.
