Isidore Marie Auguste François Xavier Comte ( French: [oˈɡyst kɔ̃t] ( listen); 19 January 1798 – 5 September 1857)  was a French philosopher, mathematician, and writer who formulated the doctrine of positivism. He is often regarded as the first philosopher of science in the modern sense of the term.

Auguste Comte (1798–1857) is the founder of positivism, a philosophical and political movement which enjoyed a very wide diffusion in the second half of the nineteenth century. It sank into an almost complete oblivion during the twentieth, when it was eclipsed by neopositivism.
More narrowly, the term designates the thought of the French philosopher Auguste Comte (1798–1857). As a philosophical ideology and movement, positivism first assumed its distinctive features in the work of Comte, who also named and systematized the science of sociology.
Auguste Comte was born in Montpellier, France. After attending the Lycée Joffre and then the University of Montpellier, he was admitted to the École Polytechnique in Paris. The École closed in 1816, at which time Comte took up permanent residence in Paris, earning a precarious living there by teaching mathematics and journalism.
