Belle Isle Park, known simply as Belle Isle (/ b ɛ l ˈ aɪ ə l /), is a 982-acre (1.534 sq mi; 397 ha) island park in Detroit, Michigan, developed in the late 19th century. It consists of Belle Isle , an island in the Detroit River , as well as several surrounding islets.

In 2014, Michigan formally declared Belle Isle as a Michigan state park, which provided additional funding to restore this beautiful park. Millions of visitors now know Belle Isle as a popular spot for family reunions, educational trips, and amazing views of Detroit and the nearby Canadian border.

Belle Isle is a recreational island park located in the Detroit River. The French who settled the island in the 1700s referred to it as “Hog Island,” and allowed public use for keeping animals. The City of Detroit purchased the island from the Campau family in 1879 and opened it to the public the following year.

The conservatory and Belle Isle Aquarium originally were designed as one facility and have been one of Belle Isle’s favorite attractions since it first opened in 1904. The conservatory features an indoor display of plants from around the world, outdoor seasonal flora beds and a koi lily pond.
