William Redington Hewlett ( / ˈhjuːlɪt / HEW-lit; May 20, 1913 – January 12, 2001) was an American engineer and the co-founder, with David Packard, of the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) . Early life and education [ edit] Hewlett was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where his father taught at the University of Michigan Medical School.
Bill scouted for places where the newlyweds could live. He found the ideal rental at 367 Addison Avenue in Palo Alto for $45 per month. Dave and Lucile would live in the downstairs flat, while Bill would bunk in a tiny backyard shed where there was indoor plumbing and just enough room for a cot.
Bill, a member of the US Army Reserve, was called into service in February of 1942. He would serve most of his tour as a Signal Corps officer in Washington, DC, while Dave stayed with the company to keep up with war production demands, sleeping on a cot in his office to manage operations day and night.
One year later, on January 12, 2001, Bill Hewlett succumbed to heart failure. He was 87 years old. Building on a 50-Year Legacy At Bill Hewlett’s memorial service, in the church that Jane Stanford built and he quietly rebuilt, his many friends and colleagues spoke about his legacy, his impact on Silicon Valley, education and philanthropy.
