Animals. At any given time, approximately 550 animals of 180 species call the 122-acre Birmingham Zoo home, including sea lions, elephants, bears, flamingos, and endangered species from six continents. For a current list of all species in our collection, see our Animal List.

About Us. One of the state’s most popular attractions, the Birmingham Zoo, is an ever-evolving adventure. Guests come from around the Southeast to see animals such as red pandas, lions, giraffes, orangutans, rhinos, bears, elephants, sea lions, zebras, a jaguar, a hippo and many more.

The Birmingham Zoo is the only AZA accredited Zoo in the state of Alabama. Regular Zoo Hours Wednesday – Sunday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Birmingham Zoo is closed Monday & Tuesday unless open for a holiday. Entry into the Zoo stops 30 minutes before closing.

The Birmingham Zoo is a zoological park that opened in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. The Birmingham Zoo is an independent, not for profit, 501(c)(3) organization, and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), participating in AZA Species Survival Plans (SSP).
