Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. (November 9, 1915 – January 18, 2011) was an American diplomat, politician, and activist. As the husband of Eunice Kennedy Shriver , he was part of the Kennedy family . Shriver was the driving force behind the creation of the Peace Corps , and founded the Job Corps , Head Start , VISTA , Upward Bound ,  and other programs as the architect of the 1960s War on Poverty .

Robert Sargent Shriver was born on November 9, 1915 in Westminster, Maryland to Robert and Hilda Shriver. After graduating from the Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut, which he attended on a full scholarship, Shriver spent the summer in Germany as part of the Experiment in International Living, returning in the fall of 1934 to begin college at Yale University.

Sarge enrolled in Yale Law School in 1938, receiving his L.L.B. in 1941. Sarge went on to serve five years in active duty in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
