Christian Daniel Rauch (krĬs´tyän dä´nyĕl roukh), 1777–1857, German sculptor. After studying in Rome (1804–11 and again later), where his work was influenced by Thorvaldsen, he achieved a reputation as an outstanding sculptor of tombs, monuments, and portraits.
His talent was soon spotted by Gottfried Wilhelm Schadow: Rauch became his assistant in 1803 and later received funds to study in Italy by the Prussian king. In 1815 he returned to Berlin, where he laboured tirelessly until his death. Rauch was one of principal proponents of the Berlin school that strove for greater naturalism in sculpture.
