- 02:39Trump woos autoworkers as rivals clash at GOP debateReuters VideosSTORY: Donald Trump spent Wednesday (September 27) night courting blue collar voters in Michigan. Instead of joining what turned out to be a chaotic second Republican presidential debate in California. For a man who wasn't there, Trump’s presence remained heavy in the room as his seven Republican rivals used the debate to attack him. Among them, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called out Trump for being “missing in action” and for adding trillions of dollars to the national debt, saying: “He should be on this stage tonight. He owes it to you to defend his record.” This comes after months of avoiding direct conflict with the former president, as DeSantis’ poll numbers plunged from previously being a viable Trump alternative. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who is a frequent Trump critic, accused Trump of being “afraid”, calling him “Donald Duck” for “ducking” the debate. Mike Pence, who was Trump’s vice president, offered a mild critique of his desire to centralize power in the federal government. While former United Nations envoy Nikki Haley, who was also once South Carolina governor, said Trump’s trade-focused approach to China was wrong. The Republican rivals also hit out at Democratic President Joe Biden - and, even more so, at one another. But as the debate ended, none of the seven candidates on stage appeared to have secured any sort of breakout moment that could loosen Trump's grip on the primary contest. The former President’s four criminal indictments went virtually unmentioned during the two-hour broadcast. Trump leads his nearest rival for the nomination by 37 percentage points in a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. Minutes before the debate kicked off, Trump delivered a speech to striking autoworkers in the battleground state of Michigan. Telling them their pay talks with America’s three biggest carmakers didn’t matter, because Biden’s push for electric vehicles was about to kill all their jobs. “Biden's mandate isn't a government regulation it's a government assassination of your jobs and of your industry. The auto industry is being assassinated and it makes no difference what you get.” Wednesday marked the second time Trump has shunned the GOP debate this election cycle. “Do me a favor. Just get your union guys, your leaders, to endorse me and I'll take care of the rest.” Trump's decision signals a focus on beating Biden - rather than the Republican contenders who trail him badly in the polls.9 hours ago
- 00:57Trump tells autoworkers EV push will 'kill' jobsReuters VideosSTORY: Trump accused President Joe Biden's push to promote electric vehicle production of killing jobs across the industry, saying, "The auto industry is being assassinated and it makes no difference what you get." Choosing to skip the second Republican presidential debate scheduled on the same night, Trump repeatedly called for the United Auto Workers union and its leader Shawn Fain to endorse him for next year's presidential election. "Endorse Trump and you can take a nice two-month vacation, come back and you guys are going to be better than you ever were. Because the other way you won't have a vacation, Shawn. And in a short period of time, you're not going to have a union, you're not going to have jobs, you're not going to have anything." To date, the UAW has declined to support either presidential candidate. With Biden joining a picket line on Tuesday to show solidarity with the United Auto Workers union members against the United States' top three carmakers, it highlights the importance both Trump and Biden place on securing support from working-class voters in battleground states such as Michigan in next year's presidential race.14 hours ago

- 03:50How Trump's business in New York could be affected by fraud rulingCBS News VideosA New York judge ruled Tuesday that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization committed fraud for years, saying the former president inflated the value of his assets by billions of dollars and lied about his net worth on financial statements. - 01:57Trump found liable for fraud in New York civil caseReuters VideosSTORY: Donald Trump was found liable of financial fraud in a New York civil case alongside his eldest sons as well as some business associates. That decision came Tuesday from New York judge Arthur Engoron, and marks a major defeat for Trump that could severely impact his ability to make money in New York as he seeks a return to the White House next year. The judge said Trump and the other defendants dishonestly inflated the ex-president's net worth, the value of his properties and other assets, to suit their own business needs. In particular, the judge took issue with Trump lying about how big his penthouse was, claiming it was 30,000 square feet, nearly triple its actual size, resulting in an overvaluation of as much as $207 million. As penalty the judge stripped Trump of certificates that let some of his businesses operate in New York, including the Trump Organization. The Tuesday ruling is also a big victory for New York state Attorney General Letitia James, who last year pressed charges against Trump... "We are filing a lawsuit against Donald Trump for violating the law as part of his efforts to generate profits for himself, his family and his company." Tuesday's ruling makes it easier for James to establish damages at a trial set for October, which was also set to look at whether Trump and his children lied about his net worth to get better loans and insurance. Trump has filed a lawsuit against Judge Engoron. He's accused him and James of ignoring an appeals court order to narrow the case. The lawsuit aimed to delay the trial, arguing Engoron's inaction has made it impossible to prepare a defense. Trump has blasted his fraud accusations as "ridiculous and untrue", in a post on his Truth Social platform. He accused Engoron as a "deranged" judge doing the bidding of James, a Democrat. Trump, who faces a slew of other litigation, has denied all wrongdoing, and branded the cases a Democrat "witch hunt" against him.2 days ago

- 02:26BIden vs. Trump in MichiganReuters VideosSTORY: U.S. President Joe Biden joined the picket line with striking auto workers outside a General Motors plant near Detroit Tuesday and backed their demand for a 40 percent pay increase. "You guys UAW, you saved the automobile industry back in 2008 and before made a lot of sacrifices, gave up a lot and the companies were in trouble, but now they're doing incredibly well. And guess what you should be doing incredibly well too." Flanked by Secret Service agents, Biden exchanged fist bumps and took selfies with the crowd after he spoke. UAW workers this month began targeted strikes against GM, Ford and Chrysler parent Stellantis seeking wage increases to match CEO pay jumps, shorter work weeks and job security as the industry moves toward electric vehicles. Biden’s appearance here comes one day before his leading challenger former President Donald Trump is scheduled to address workers at a nearby auto parts supplier. Republicans believe Biden's push to electrify America's vehicle fleet, by pumping billions of dollars of tax rebates into EV manufacturing, is unpopular with auto workers. In a statement on Tuesday, Trump accused Biden of "stabbing" auto workers in the back, claiming Biden's EV mandate will "annihilate" the U.S. auto industry and cost "thousands of autoworkers their jobs." Biden though was joined on his visit by the head of the United Auto Workers union Shawn Fain. “And so today I just want to take a moment to stand with all of you with our President. And say thank you to the President. Thank you, Mr. President, for coming.” The appreciation only goes so far, the UAW has declined to support either 2024 presidential candidate, making it the only major union not to back Biden. Both candidates are expected to sharpen their 2024 campaign message in Michigan, a state which helped propel Trump to the White House in 2016 and then helped Biden win in 2020. Union voters are seen as key to victory here. While only about 10% of U.S. workers were union members in 2022, they have outsized political influence because the states where they are strong like Michigan often swing from voting Democratic to Republican, and their grassroots networks are powerful influences on the working-class vote.2 days ago
