Renowned historian C.H. Wendel in American Gasoline Engines Since 1872 identifies the two Cushman men as brothers. Several other sources attribute the early Cushman patents to Everett Cushman and his cousin, Clinton Cushman – but Clinton’s name does not appear on any of the three earliest Cushman patents.

Clinton attended the University of Nebraska, graduating with an Engineering Degree. His sister Lucy also was a student at the university. Their brother Leslie was an engineer at B&M Pump House.

Cousins Everett and Clinton Cushman founded the company in 1902 after patenting an invention that vastly improved the efficiency of two-cycle engines. The engines originally were mounted on farm equipment, lawnmowers and washing machines.

Cousins Everett and Clinton Cushman started building small engines for farm equipment in 1901. Their project grew into Omaha’s Cushman Motor Works, which produced motors for everything from cream separators and concrete mixers to water pumps and wood saws.

The Cushman company started in 1903 in Lincoln, Nebraska, by Everett & Clinton Cushman. The company incorporated as Cushman Motor Works in 1913. Cushman began production of their four-stroke Husky engine in 1922. Cushman produced engines for farm equipment, pumps, lawn mowers and boats.
