Federico Faggin was born in Vicenza, Italy, in 1941. He received his doctorate (Laurea) in physics from the University of Padua (1965). He began working at SGS Fairchild in Italy, where he developed their first MOS process technology and their first integrated circuits (ICS).

Federico Faggin is a physicist, inventor, and entrepreneur. Born, raised, and educated in Italy, he immigrated to the US in 1968. He is credited with designing the world’s first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004 in 1971, and he went on to invent dozens of other integrated circuits.

Federico Faggin, born in Vicenza, Italy, attended the University of Padua, Italy, where he received a “Dottore in Fisica” degree, summa cum laude, in 1965. After a brief work experience in Italy, Faggin came to the United States in early 1968 to work for Fairchild Semiconductor in its R&D Laboratory in Palo Alto, California.

When Zilog set up as a rival to Intel, Faggin moved away from R&D to become an entrepreneur and CEO. He has headed three start-ups, and recently became chairman of the board of his latest venture, Synaptics, a developer of user interface solutions for mobile computing and entertainment devices.
