Francis Poulenc 1899 Birth of Francis Poulenc on 7 January. His father, Emile Poulenc, born in 1855, is an industrialist from the Aveyron region who, with his two brothers, runs a chemical factory. His mother, Jenny Royer, is from a family of artisans whose Parisian roots date back several generations.
This is a list of works written by the French composer Francis Poulenc (1899–1963). As a pianist, Poulenc composed many pieces for his own instrument in his piano music and chamber music. He wrote works for orchestra including several concertos, also three operas, two ballets, incidental music for plays and film music.
Francis Poulenc (b. 7 January 1899–d. 30 January 1963) is the most frequently performed, recorded, and studied member of the French group that, in 1920, critic Henri Collet dubbed Les Six (Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Germaine Tailleferre, and Poulenc).
Francis Poulenc was the leading composer of Les Six, the French group devoted to turning music away from Impressionism, formality, and intellectualism. He wrote in a direct and tuneful manner, often juxtaposing the witty and ironic with the sentimental or melancholy. He heavily favored diatonic and modal textures over chromatic writing.
Fr. composer and pianist. Taught pf. by his mother. At 15 studied with Ricardo Viñes, who encouraged his ambition to compose and introduced him to Satie, Casella, Auric, and others. In 1917 his Rapsodie nègre brought his name to notorious prominence in Paris as one of a number of composers— Les Nouveaux Jeunes —encouraged by Satie and Cocteau.
