Popular year-round, but especially on sunny summer days, Gas Works Park is a popular greenspace with some old remains from an coal gasification plant. A rolling hill on the north side of Lake Union offers a great place to luxuriate in the sun and watch water traffic on the lake.
Truly Regional Park. Gas Works Park has continued to stand as a symbol of Seattle parks since its public opening. It projects 400 feet into Lake Union with 1,900 feet of shoreline and features the Great Mound, the preserved cracking towers, and transformed picnic shelter and play barn.
Landscape Information. On the shores of Lake Union opposite downtown Seattle, Gas Works Park was built on the location of a former coal gasification plant. The 19-acre site was acquired by the City for parkland in 1965.
Today, Gasworks is one of the most popular parks in Seattle. Thousands of people gather here to celebrate Seattle’s annual 4 th of July celebration, featuring an elaborate fireworks display set off from a barge in the middle of Lake Union.
