About the Observatory. Griffith Observatory is southern California’s gateway to the cosmos! Visitors may look through telescopes, explore exhibits, see live shows in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, and enjoy spectacular views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Sign.
Griffith Park is open to the public from 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Bridle trails, hiking paths, and mountain roads close at sunset. The park is northwest of downtown Los Angeles, just west of I-5, roughly between Los Feliz Boulevard and the Ventura Freeway (CA Hwy 134).
Everyone is Welcome. Griffith Observatory is a free-admission facility located on the south side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. The building and grounds are accessible for all visitors. The building is busiest on weekends, during summer and holiday periods, and at sunset.
Most park areas and facilities in Griffith Park are open, including trails and golf courses. Griffith Park is open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Road parking and lots are open. There is paid parking available in and around the Observatory (see below). Road closures are possible if traffic becomes congested.
