From desert to oasis. In Branitz near Cottbus, where there used to be a barren sandy desert, the eccentric 60-year-old Hermann Prince of Pückler-Muskau once again laid out an English landscape park, which he himself described as his masterpiece. The park was created from 1846 onwards, after Pückler had to sell his estate in Muskau.

The Branitz Palace and Gardens-Park is the biggest attraction in Cottbus, after the old town of Cottbus itself, of course. A leisurely 20 minute Express Bus Ride from central Cottbus, the park area is just absolutely wonderful, and can be enjoyed in all types of weather.

Since human cremation was illegal at that time for religious reasons, he resorted to an ingenious evasion of traditional burial; he left instructions that his heart be dissolved in sulphuric acid, and that his body should be embedded in caustic soda, caustic potash, and caustic lime.
