Airline Summary. The largest airline in Spain, Madrid-based Iberia (IB) flies non-stop to about 15 domestic destinations and about 60 international destinations within Europe, and in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, North America and South America. Iberia is the flag carrier airline of Spain. This airline was founded in 1927 and is currently based in Madrid, Barajas Airport. Initially, Iberia Airlines would only fly within the Spanish territories. However, after World War II, it started to fly to more distant destinations like Latin America and the UK.
Iberia is the leader in the routes between Europe and Latin America. Together with its subsidiary Iberia Express and its franchisee Iberia Regional Air Nostrum, it offers around 600 flights a day to 50 countries in Europe, America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, with a fleet of 144 aircraft. Iberia Group airlines fly to over 109 destinations in 39 countries, and a further 90 destinations through code-sharing agreements with other airlines. [7] On 8 April 2010, it was confirmed that British Airways and Iberia had signed an agreement to merge, [8] making the combined operation the third largest commercial airline in the world by revenue.
