The Bell Telephone Co. of Illinois was chartered in 1878; three years later, it became part of the Chicago Telephone Co. By the beginning of the twentieth century, Chicago Telephone was associated with the Bell network of American Telephone & Telegraph Co. (AT&T), the largest phone company in the United States.

Illinois Bell Telephone Company is the legal name of what has generally been known as Ameritech Illinois since 1993. The firm is the largest provider of local telephone service in the state, and recently has been at the forefront of new technologies such as fiber optics and digital switching.

Illinois Bell, in 1971, became the first ever telephone company to offer Call waiting [citation needed], Three-way calling [citation needed], Speed Calling [citation needed], and Call forwarding [citation needed], all popular local exchange carrier telephone service options to this day.

These firms included the Chicago Telephone Company, the dominant Chicago firm at the turn of the twentieth century, and Illinois Bell, which absorbed Chicago Telephone in 1920. Both of these companies were pillars of the “Bell System,” the national telephone network that was coordinated after 1900 by American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T).
