John Winthrop, often known as “John Winthrop, Junior” or “the Younger”, was the eldest son of John Winthrop, first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Mary Forth, his first wife. His parents were wealthy, and in 1622, at age 16, he was sent to Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, for a general education.

The oldest of their children was John Winthrop the Younger, who became a governor and magistrate of Connecticut Colony. [20] [21] Their last two children, both girls, died not long after birth, and Mary died in 1615 from complications of the last birth. [19]

His eldest son, John Winthrop the Younger (l. 1606-1676 CE, one of the surviving children of his first marriage), followed his father's example in education and pursuing a career in law and would later play a major role in the colonization of New England.
