University College (colloquially known as “Univ”) is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in England. It claims to be the university’s oldest college, founded in 1249 by William of Durham. Like many of Oxford’s colleges, University accepted its first mixed-sex cohort in 1979, having previously been an institution for only men.

The history of Univ is a fascinating one. University College owes its origins to William of Durham, who died in 1249; however a legend grew up in the 1380s that we were actually founded even earlier, by King Alfred in 872, and, understandably enough, this became widely accepted as the truth.

The University of Oxford has thirty-nine colleges, and five permanent private halls (PPHs) of religious foundation. Colleges (with the exception of three 'societies of the university') and PPHs are autonomous self-governing corporations within the university.
