Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (26 March 1794 – 24 May 1872) [1] ( German pronunciation: [ˈjuːlɪʊs ʃnɔʁ fɔn ˈkaːʁɔlsfɛlt]) was a German painter, chiefly of Biblical subjects. As a young man he associated with the painters of the Nazarene movement who revived the florid Renaissance style in religious art.

Schnorr von Carolsfeld was a member of the Nazarene Brotherhood of painters active in Rome in the early decades of the 19th century. Like them, he sought to invest modern painting with the purity of form and spiritual values he admired in the art of early Renaissance Italy and Northern Europe.
The picture was painted in Munich, based on drawings Schnorr von Carolsfeld had made a few years earlier in Italy. He had spent ten years in Italy, and was a leading figure in a group of German and Austrian artists named the Nazarenes who sought to return modern painting to the purity of form and spiritual values that they saw in Renaissance art.
