Kalanithi is the grand-nephew of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. Also, he is the son of Murasoli Maran; former Union Minister of Commerce and brother of India’s former Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran. In the early 1990s, he started a monthly Tamil magazine- Poomaalai. With an investment of US$200 from a bank loan, Maran founded Sun TV on 14 April 1993.
