Kyiv (also spelled Kiev) [a] is the capital and most populous city of Ukraine. It is in north-central Ukraine along the Dnieper River. As of 1 January 2022, its population was 2,952,301,  making Kyiv the seventh-most populous city in Europe.  Kyiv is an important industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural center in Eastern Europe.

About 882 Oleg (Oleh), the ruler of Novgorod, captured Kyiv and made it his capital, the centre of the first East Slavic state, Kyivan (Kievan) Rus .

Kyiv , also spelled Kiev, City (pop., 2008: 2,745,006), capital of Ukraine, located along the Dnieper River. It was founded in the 6th or 7th century, and by the late 9th century its princes had expanded their territory to establish the state of Kyivan Rus. In 1240 it was destroyed by the Mongols of the Golden Horde.
