Mariners' Church held that it is an independent congregation free of denominational ties, while the Episcopal Church held that it had always considered the church an Episcopal congregation. The courts ruled in favor of Mariners' Church in the initial case in 1990 and an appeal in 1992. The parish is now a part of the Anglican Church in North America within the Diocese of Mid-America (REC). The Church uses the 1662 and American 1928 editions of the Book of Common Prayer.
Church Online is a place for you to experience God and connect with others.
Mariners’ Church was established in 1842 with money willed by Julia Ann Anderson, the widow of Fort Detroit commander Colonel John Anderson. She specified that her lot on the corner of Woodward Avenue and Woodbridge Street in Detroit become “a site for a Mariners’ Church…” specifically to watch over the spiritual well-being of sailors and the greater community.
